Loving Krishna – Part 3

The self-same Krishna appeared five hundred years back in the most munificent form of Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya’s pastimes are an ocean of sweet nectar. They display the highest form of love for Krishna, the highest form of compassion, the highest form of loving relationships among devotees, and the highest attainment of life.

Mahaprabhu’s pastimes specifically depict the mind of the Supreme Lord Krishna. The heart and mind of Lord Krishna is filled with His devotees. Krishna says,
sādhavo hṛdayaṁ mahyaṁ
sādhūnāṁ hṛdayaṁ tv aham
mad-anyat te na jānanti
nāhaṁ tebhyo manāg api

The pure devotee is always within the core of My heart, and I am always in the heart of the pure devotee. My devotees do not know anything else but Me, and I do not know anyone else but them.

But a very clear depiction of this statement can be found in Mahaprabhu’s pastimes wherein Mahaprabhu feels so much for each and everyone of His devotees. He personally applies sandalwood, garlands his devotees when they come to Jagannath Puri from Bengal. He personally serves all devotees with his own lotus hands. He personally begs and requests for permission from devotees. He is unable to tolerate separation from His devotees. Although Krishna also has the same feelings for His devotees, it shines forth in the pastimes of Lord Caitanya.

All the devotees who came previously in Lord Krishna’s pastimes and later appeared as acaryas have written songs in praise of Lord Caitanya. They eulogize Lord Caitanya to a great extent. Actually, through Lord Caitanya, it is very easy to attain love for Shyamsundar Krishna. The acaryas have set that mood rightly.

Srila Prabhodananda Saraswati says,
yathā yathā gaura-padāravinde
vindeta bhaktiṁ kṛta-puṇya-rāśiḥ
tathā tathotsarpati hṛdy akasmāt
rādhā-padāmbhoja-sudhāṁśu-rāśiḥ

“To the degree that we surrender to Lord Caitanya’s service, to that degree we gain qualification for the service to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇīs lotus feet in Vraja.”

Bhaktivinode Thakura says,
gaura-prema-rasārṇave, śe taraṅge jebā ḍube,
se rādhā-mādhava-antaraṅga

Anyone who takes pleasure in sporting within the waves of the ocean of Lord Caitanya’s distribution of love of God immediately becomes a confidential devotee of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava.

Narottama Dasa Thakura desires and aspires to be the servant of servant of Lord Caitanya,
śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya-prabhur dāser anudāsa
sevā abhilāṣa kore narottama-dāsa

Shrila Prabhupada practically engaged all the devotees in Lord Caitanya’s sankirtan mission. Simply by engaging ourselves whole-heartedly in Mahaprabhu’s service we can develop love for Krishna.
