Srila Prabhupada was once asked, “Why are you riding in a Rolls-Royce car?”
Prabhupada replied that he was a representative of God, and therefore, if they wanted to give him a car, they should give him a gold car, not an iron car.
And Srila Prabhupada was right.
How can even gold compare with the contribution a spiritual master makes in our lives?
Srila Prabhupada’s contribution is unparalleled. Although he stayed in Vrindavan, he brought the whole world to Vrindavan, and he brought Vrindavan to the whole world.
Srila Prabhupada also created a New Vrindavan in the hills of West Virginia, America.
And in reciprocation, his disciples gave him a historic place to stay for eternity—the Palace of Gold.
The Palace of Gold is one of the most beautiful places created by Srila Prabhupada’s disciples. It is not simply a residential quarter; it is a testimony to the love that disciples can offer to their spiritual master. It contains marble from 17 different countries, beautiful chandeliers adorned with crystals from various places, and extensive use of 22 to 24-karat gold.
But the real Palace of Gold is not the one we see with our eyes. The real Palace of Gold is the one that Srila Prabhupada’s disciples built within their hearts. That is the reason they could create this Palace of Gold externally.
A Place in the Heart, a Palace in Art
The challenges, austerities, hardships, and inconveniences that Srila Prabhupada’s early disciples willingly accepted for him showcase their extra-ordinary love for him.
After a talk by Srutakirti Prabhu at the palace of gold, I was sitting beside a few of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples—Kuladri Prabhu, Nityoditta Prabhu, and Srutakirti Prabhu. They were sitting on the stairs, honoring prasadam, and even then, they were completely absorbed in glorifying Srila Prabhupada.
Srutakirti Prabhu mentioned in the talk that Srila Prabhupada would personally take all his disciples with him. He said, “I am waiting for that day when Srila Prabhupada will take me. I am ready to go anywhere for him.”
How can someone become so deeply attracted to a personality that, 55 years later, all he wants to do is speak about him?
And it is not only him. So many of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples have established a Palace of Gold within their own hearts, where they have invited Srila Prabhupada to reside permanently.
A Temple in Every Heart, Beyond Desires of Every Sort
Seeing Srila Saraswati Thakura’s vigorous preaching spirit, he was once asked, “Do you want to build a temple on every street?”
Srila Saraswati Thakura replied, “No. I want to build a temple in every heart.”
When a temple is built in the heart of one person, and then expands into the hearts of many people, why would a physical temple not eventually come up where Krishna can reside?
From Longing to Belonging: Transforming the Warehouse of Desires into a Palace of Gold
Right now, our hearts may be filled with so many material desires. Some are like iron—heavy, coarse, and difficult to let go of. Others are like copper—more refined and subtle, desires for name, fame, recognition, respect, success, or prestige that can appear respectable and even noble, making them much harder to recognize as material desires. And then there is plastic—the obvious glitter of temporary pleasures, possessions, entertainment, and worldly attractions that may sparkle for a moment, but quickly lose their shine and can never satisfy the soul.
But the heart was never meant to be a warehouse for material desires. The heart is meant to be a palace: a divine palace.
And a palace becomes truly beautiful not by what it contains but when it is prepared for its rightful resident.
In the same way, when devotees come together with the sincere desire to fulfill the desires of their spiritual master, their hearts are transformed into palaces of gold—sacred places where his presence continues.
May the instructions of our spiritual masters become the foundation upon which our palace stands. May his teachings become the walls that give our lives form, strength, and shelter.
Let us cultivate his qualities within ourselves, so that they become the windows through which the light of his teachings shines—not only into our own lives, but into the lives of everyone around us.
And above all, let us try to make the sincere desire to fulfill his desires the very spirit that brings this palace to life. Then the heart is no longer a warehouse filled with what we want for ourselves; it becomes a palace built around what he desires to give to the world.
