Three Glances of Lord Caitanya – Vaishnava Darshan: Part 11

Parikshit Maharaj glorifies the power of the sight, or even the mere remembrance of a Vaishnava. Not just their physical presence, but even remembering a devotee has purifying potency:
yeṣāṁ saṁsmaraṇāt puṁsāṁ
sadyaḥ śuddhyanti vai gṛhāḥ
kiṁ punar darśana-sparśa-
pāda-śaucāsanādibhiḥ

“Simply by our remembering you, our houses become instantly sanctified. What to speak of seeing you, touching you, washing your holy feet, and offering you a seat in our home?” SB 1.19.33

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is nonetheless the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but He appeared in the mood of a devotee.

What was the power of His one glance? It could make one give up all material desires and transform them into a lover of Krishna. During His South India yatra, Mahaprabhu delivered thousands simply by casting His merciful glance.

When Mahaprabhu was travelling to Vrindavan for the first time, he took a detour only to meet Rupa and Sanatana.

The First Glance:

When Sanatana Goswami received the audience of Mahaprabhu for the first time in Ramakeli, the Lord initiated him and blessed him with the strength to become free from the clutches of Nawab Hussain Shah. This was the first installment of Mahaprabhu’s mercy. Mahaprabhu was immensely pleased with his humility.

Lord Caitanya said, “My dear Sākara Mallika, from this day your names will be changed to Śrīla Rūpa and Śrīla Sanātana. Now please abandon your humility, for My heart is breaking to see you so humble. You have written several letters showing your humility. I can understand your behavior from those letters. Birth after birth you have been My eternal servants. I am sure that Kṛṣṇa will deliver you very soon.” CC Madhya 1.210-215

The Second Glance:

By Mahaprabhu’s grace, Sanatana freed himself from the clutches of the Nawab. When Sanatana reached Varanasi, he came outside Candrashekhara Acarya’s house.

Mahaprabhu instructed Chandrashekhar Acharya to bring the Vaishnava who was sitting outside his house. Chandrashekhar came out, saw a man, and returned to say that there was no Vaishnava outside, but only a Muslim mendicant. Mahaprabhu immediately told him to bring that very person in. As soon as He saw Sanatana, Mahaprabhu ran toward him and embraced him, and both of them cried in ecstatic love.
Sanātana said,
sanātana kahe,—’kṛṣṇa āmi nāhi jāni
āmāra uddhāra-hetu tomāra kṛpā māni’

“I do not know who Kṛṣṇa is. As far as I am concerned, I have been released from prison only by Your mercy.”
CC Madhya 20.64

This was the second installment of Mahaprabhu’s mercy.

The Third Glance:

Mahaprabhu noticed Sanatana wearing a costly blanket, a gift from his brother-in-law Srikanta. He repeatedly glanced at it. Being intelligent, Sanatana understood Mahaprabhu’s mind. He exchanged the blanket for an old quilt. When Mahaprabhu saw Sanatana with the worn quilt, He became exceedingly pleased. He said to Sanatana,

prabhu kahe,—”ihā āmi kariyāchi vicāra
viṣaya-roga khaṇḍāila kṛṣṇa ye tomāra

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu then said, “I have already deliberately considered this matter. Since Lord Kṛṣṇa is very merciful, He has nullified your attachment for material things.” CC Madhya 20.90

In all three meetings, the glance of Mahaprabhu acted in extraordinary ways:

  1. First, by initiating and blessing him.
  2. Second, by embracing and flooding him with divine love.
  3. Third, by removing the last trace of material attachment.

Devotees should eagerly seek the glance of a spiritual master or spiritual preceptors. Their glances carry the potency to burn away our material attachments and awaken love for the Supreme Lord. We should never shy away from their gaze out of fear of chastisement. If we don’t go before Vaishnavas, what is our hope? The glance of a Vaishnava is capable of negating millions of lifetimes of karma and tons of avarice for serving the Supreme Lord. Therefore, giving up all hesitation, we should try to come in front of devotees, and receive their merciful or penetrating or chastising glance.
