A Tribute to Kaviraja’s Poetry and Shrila Prabhupada

Caitanya Caritamrita is amazing. Prabhupada’s only solace was Caitanya Caritamrita while he was on his way to America. Sitting in the Jaladuta Cargo ship, he was feeling separation from Madan Mohan and Gopinath. But, the text of Sri Caitanya Caritamrita was granting him solace.

How beautifully Krishnadas Kaviraja Goswami has written it!! He seems to be in total ecstasy while writing it.

Each verse is an exquisite poetry. The eloquent manner in which he narrates the expanse of Mahaprabhu’s and Panca Tattva’s grace is worth reading. If reading can give so much joy, how much will experiencing give? And furthermore, how beautiful are the purports given by Shrila Prabhupada!

Prabhupada writes the following dedication for the book:
Presented to my friends
and devotees who like to read
my books and who approached me
to request that I render the great
Caitanya-caritāmṛta into English

If one likes to read Shrila Prabhupada books, it is a great treat for the heart. And it can treat the disease of our heart. Prabhupada has especially presented it for those who like to read his books.

caitanya-siṁhera navadvīpe avatāra
siṁha-grīva, siṁha-vīrya, siṁhera huṅkāra

Thus the lionlike Lord Caitanya has appeared in Navadvīpa. He has the shoulders of a lion, the powers of a lion, and the loud voice of a lion.

Krishnadas Kaviraja Goswami offers this benediction to the readers:

sei siṁha vasuk jīvera hṛdaya-kandare
kalmaṣa-dvirada nāśe yāṅhāra huṅkāre

May that lion be seated in the core of the heart of every living being. Thus with His resounding roar may He drive away one’s elephantine vices. CC Adi 3.30-31

Prabhupada speaks against the Mayavadi philosophers who argue that devotees simply chant and dance. Prabhupada says we have written more books than what they have even read. The most esoteric truths of our philosophy have been given in a simple manner by Shrila Prabhupada in Caitanya Caritamrita.

Prabhupada’s was longing to be in Vrindavan with Madan Mohan and Gopinath, and his separation was being mitigated by Lord Caitanya’s Lila. The same Krishna has appeared as Lord Caitanya to give solace to everyone’s heart.

Prabhupada has given us Caitanya Caritamrita, and he has given us entry into the pastimes of Lord Caitanya.

Narottama Dasa Thakura writes,
gaura-prema-rasārṇave, śe taraṅge jebā ḍube,
se rādhā-mādhava-antaraṅga
gṛhe bā vanete thāke, ‘hā gaurāṅga’ bo’le ḍāke,
narottama māge tāra saṅga

Anyone who takes pleasure in sporting within the waves of the ocean of Lord Caitanya’s distribution of love of God immediately becomes a confidential devotee of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava. It doesn’t matter whether such a devotee is in the renounced order of life or whether he is a householder. If he is actually taking part in Lord Caitanya’s saṅkīrtana activities and actually understanding what it is, then such a person is always liberated. Narottama Dāsa aspires for his association.
